ANNUAL APPRAISAL FOR CONSULTANTS
BACKGROUND
Why introduce the Consultant Appraisal process?
- Consultant appraisal focuses on important aspects of clinical governance, which ensures that patient care reaches high standards of quality. (Scot. Exec)
- Annual appraisal is linked to GMC five-year evaluation focusing on a "standard" measured against a framework of GMC's Good Medical Practice.
- Appraisal uses standardised documentation. Is a national UK system "to ensure that there is a consistent, transparent approach to the collection and use of information and in the application of clear, shared standards and practices.
- Criteria for satisfactory performance are externally defined within seven core headings of GMC good medical practice.
- It is based on one-to-one interviews although third parties can be introduced (Consultant Appraisal Scotland) using documented evidence prepared in advance focusing on appraisee dialogue.
- Can and should be able to identify barriers to professional development and achievement

- maintain fitness to practice
- Identify gaps in personal effectiveness and professional development
- assist not discredit
